WORK & CAREER
There's a big difference between a "job" and a "vocation." One's vocation needs to be closely tied into who one authentically is and flow from a direct connection to that. When someone is doing what they were "meant" to do, they are able to express themselves fully while practicing their trade and making a living. When we're a frog in toad's clothing we look funny, feel funny, out of it... When we find the right fit - we feel more naturally ourselves, more creative, more validated... Kinda obvious, huh?
Career counselors have "finding your true calling" literally down to a science - using testing tools like the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (see "humanmetrics link below) to find out what you would organically be doing if you were a multi-billionaire and had all the time in the world. Of course, you'd kick back for a while, but eventually you would just start doing what you love (and so love what you were doing). This is everyone's essential career goal. "Is it Work? Is it Play? I can't really tell..."
I guess were not really all that good at doing what we don't do well! No one does everything well. One woman's ideal environment is another woman's nightmare. The writer needs space and time to dream and then loves his pen and paper. The accountant will have none of that—she loves her numbers and their finite characteristics. The problem comes when the accountant type is in the writer's role or vice-versa. Who are you, really? And what do you want to be doing? If you build it they will come. If you're doing what you love, you've basically already succeeded. TB
